This is one of the best suspense books I've read lately, probably one of the best ever. I said it here last Wednesday, and I'll say it again: I have no idea why I never grabbed Catherine Mann's Elite Force Series before!
I liked everything about this book except the cover (could someone please keep the half naked men off the book covers, please; I have kids and I like to read in the same room where they are...). I only wish it had lasted longer. Though the Kindle edition has almost 350 pages, I was still sorry to part with Sunny and Wade. I'm now halfway into book two of the series (Hot Zone) and though Wade pops in once in a while, it's not exactly the same thing.
Anyway, Sunny and Wade meet on a mountain during a terrible snowstorm. She lives in a small town in Alaska where people like to hide their secrets and keep the rest of the word at bay. Everyone is free to leave but no one can return. He, on the other hand, has just jumped off a plane and parachuted down, intent on saving her, wrongly assuming she's stranded in the storm.
After the storm passes, they stumble across the bodies of Sunny's two friends, the same two she'd escorted down the mountain the day before. Both murdered. Then someone starts shooting at Sunny and Wade and from then onwards, it's non-stop action.
Nothing in Sunny's small town is what it seems to be, the body count rises exponentially and the story culminates with a terrorist group threatening to blow up one of Alaska's main power plants and with a secret network bringing Russian spies into the US.
There's a hot romance between Sunny and Wade, and a secondary romance between Misty (Sunny's younger sister) and Flynn but, to be honest, I was so focused on the suspense and the action that the romance took second place.
Apart from the usual happy ending, nothing else is predictable in this book, from the beginning till the end, and I totally recommend it.
