Book Review: For Love and Honor, by Jody Hedlund, 5 stars

✩✩

Lady Sabine is harboring a skin blemish, one, that if revealed, could cause her to be branded as a witch, put her life in danger, and damage her chances of making a good marriage. After all, what nobleman would want to marry a woman so flawed?
Sir Bennet is returning home to protect his family from an imminent attack by neighboring lords who seek repayment of debts. Without fortune or means to pay those debts, Sir Bennet realizes his only option is to make a marriage match with a wealthy noblewoman. As a man of honor, he loathes the idea of courting a woman for her money, but with time running out for his family’s safety, what other choice does he have?
As Lady Sabine and Sir Bennet are thrust together under dangerous circumstances, will they both be able to learn to trust each other enough to share their deepest secrets? Or will those secrets ultimately lead to their demise?

Review: I loved this book. It's beautifully written, it made me smile and it made my cry in all the right places. And, more importantly, it contains a message worth mentioning: that no matter our physical imperfections, what matters the most is our inner beauty.

Here's my favorite quote:

“There is not a single man here who is faultless,” I continued, raising my voice so that I could be heard by all. “Each one of us is imperfect in some way. Perhaps God designs it so. Then none of us can claim to be like him, the only truly perfect being.”

Sabine is a wonderful character - understandably insecure in some way, but so witty and funny in others. She's resourceful, smart and brave and it's impossible not to love her. And Bennet, while not without flaws himself, is a truly honorable man. The story is told in the first person but alternating between Bennet and Sabine - at first I found it a bit confusing but I quickly got used to it.

For Love and Honor is a pleasure to read and I can't recommend it enough.

Happy readings,
